Aim
The aim of the project was to develop a spatial and social ethnography of the internationals in Geneva.
Who are ‘Internationals’?
at least 3 different groups
1 legal & rich – working for the international organisations (but not only: rich and that’s it; working in TNC)
2 legal & normal – labourers
3 illegal / poor – black market, slaves etc. (more than 7000 people but difficult to count them)
How many of them are they?
In Canton Geneva in 2004:169889 foreigners (38.7%) and 268594 swiss
about 40′000 people working in IO, Diplomatic missions, CERN and their families
How do they use Geneva?
Welcome to International Geneva!
As the home of more than 200 international institutions, Geneva, Switzerland is the centre of this international cooperation and collaboration. It is also one of Switzerland’s most fascinating cities and has been called the “Protestant Rome.” Join us in Geneva for a weekend of exploring the city (the Jet d’Eau, the old town) and exploring “global citizenship” – we will tour the United Nations and Museum of the International Red Cross, hear from the World Economic Forum, participate in a Model UN simulation, and also have fascinating discussions about the topic of global citizenship.
What does it mean to be a “global citizen”? What role do engineers, scientists, and companies play in improving our world? If you are interested in discussing these challenging questions with other IAESTE trainees and special guests, then this is the weekend for you! We will draw on YOUR knowledge, experiences, and ideas on being a global citizen in Geneva, the world’s most important meeting place.
La Genève internationale, c’est :
160 Etats étrangers représentés par une mission/représentation auprès de l’ONUG, l’OMC ou la CD;
22 organisations internationales avec accord de siège;
Environ 250 ONG avec statut consultatif auprès des Nations Unies;
4,4 milliards de CHF dépensés par les organisations intergouvernementales (en 2006) dont 2, 4 milliards sont injectés dans l’économie suisse;
